Modular Audio for Both Musicians and Geeks

March 19, 2002

Tauron Desktop
Tauron Light

In an effort to please both musicians looking for a flexible audio processing/synthesis device and programmers interested in creating their own audio algorithms, DSP Arts has introduced the Tauron line. A PC is used to program these hardware DSP boxes, but don't be too scared by the word "program."

The Tauron can be programmed at several different levels. At its simplest, you simply select one or more of the available, ready-to-use programs and download it to the Tauron. If tweaking parameters provided by those programs isn't enough, you can dig a little deeper and create your own programs from a library of basic audio processing and synthesis modules. Design your own synth if you like, graphically connecting the modules using the PC editing software.

If the included modules don't provide all the functionality you need, you can create your own modules as well in source code. Still want more? DSP Arts even provides the ability to develop complete applications at the operating system level of the Tauron. Hooks for accessing the display and controls are provided.

DSP Arts will also provide a server to exchange and download new programs and modules so your Tauron is continually expanding.

The Models

Tauron is being offered in four different hardware configurations: Tauron Desktop, Light, Rack, and Twin. The Tauron light is essentially the desktop version minus the display, encoders and buttons, so it must be controlled via MIDI controllers or a PC. Load it up with the program you need and take it to your gig. As you might guess, the Tauron Rack is a 19" rackmount version of the Tauron Desktop. The Twin is also a rackmount unit, but features two fully independent Taurons. Process different audio streams at the same time, or run the two in series when one Tauron doesn't have enough horsepower.

All Taurons are 100% software compatible.
