Soundscape Announces R.Ed DAW System

May 16, 1999

Soundscape Digital Technology is pleased to announce a major breakthrough in hard disk recording and editing with a brand new Digital Audio Workstation called R.Ed. The 32 track, 24 bit hardware has up to 28 inputs and 32 outputs per unit and comes complete with software for Windows NT and Windows 95/98. The new system was announced to the press at NAB, but will be on demonstration at the AES Convention in Munich and is expected to ship before the summer.

The target market for R.Ed is the professional recording studio, audio post for film & TV and multi-track production for radio. A 32 track system with 24 digital I/O starts at just £3995 ($6495) plus tax, hard drives, PC and if required, analogue I/O. In familiar Soundscape style, R.Ed only requires the host computer for display purposes and all the audio is processed outside the PC. This provides maximum stability and audio quality.

R.Ed features up to 32 tracks of 24 bit audio and supports two fixed and two removable EIDE drives per unit with a maximum limit of 137GB per disk. There are two AES /EBU input channels and four AES/EBU output channels, plus 24 channels of digital input and output via three 24 bit TDIF (Tascam Digital Interface) ports. R.Ed can thus be connected directly to the latest Digital Consoles from Yamaha, Tascam, Mackie, Spirit and Panasonic or to Tascam's DA-38/88/98 digital tape recorders. Alternatively, the TDIF ports can be connected directly to three Soundscape SS8IO-1 Audio Interfaces providing 24 channels of balanced analogue I/O through XLR connectors, plus 24 channels of TDIF/ADAT conversion in both directions, for use with analogue consoles or ADATs. An optional board provides 2 in, 4 out balanced analogue I/O via XLR connectors, with high specification 24bit AD/DA converters. Word/Super Clock I/O connections complete the range of interfacing possibilities provided.

R.Ed provides Recording, Editing and Playback functions with an enhanced version of the award winning Version 2 software from Soundscape's PC based SSHDR1-Plus systems. The user interface has been further developed with a focus on ease of use, harnessing the editing and recording power with intuitive, simple to use functions and easy integration within an existing studio environment.

R.Ed is feature rich with fast, non-destructive editing tools like cut, copy, move, trim, slip, normalising, real-time fades, multi-channel audio scrubbing, tools for fast dialogue editing and editing can be performed with a mouse, trackball, pen & tablet or external hardware controllers. R.Ed can also play synchronised high quality, non-linear digital video files via video capture cards, making it ideal for track laying, dialogue replacement, sound effects design and audio dubbing for film & TV post-production. Punch-in/out recording, editing 'on the fly' and multiple undo levels are also provided as standard within the software, as are 999 nameable markers that can be dropped on the fly, used for looping and auditioning edits etc., providing an uncomplicated, reliable track laying and editing workstation for busy professionals.

R.Ed is a modular system too, so two or more R.Ed's seamlessly linked together can easily provide more than 64 track playback and 48 digital ins and outs at 24 bit with any PC. The mixing environment for R.Ed comes in the form of an integrated, customisable 16 bus Digital Mixer with fully parametric EQs and all mixer configurations can be saved to disk for total recall of your favourite mixes. Mixing parameters can be controlled by optional external controllers.

The Soundscape mixtreme PCI card "powerhouse" provides the expandable mixing engine for R.Ed for those users who wish to exploit Soundscape's enhanced Mixing and Plug-in environment with Real Time 3rd Party DSP effects. Multiple mixtreme cards can be linked together if required, to provide masses of processing power for the TC Works Reverb and Dynamizer, SyncroArts VocALign, Wave Mechanics Reverb and the NEW Dolby Surround Encoding/Decoding plug-in which is also on show at AES. These plug-ins are already available, along with Soundscape's own Time Module, Audio Toolbox (Chorus/Flanger, Dynamics, Delay), CDWriter (Red Book Mastering) and EDL Processor (file support for Avid OMFI, Lightworks and Edit* by Discreet Logic, auto-conforming to CMX, Sony and GVG edit decision lists).

R.Ed also supports RS422 control via Sony 9-Pin protocols as a master or a slave device, for remote track arming, playback and recording and has the capability for installing optional synchronisation boards providing SMPTE, VITC, BITC and Video Sync.

R.Ed is the next generation of Recorder Editors and has been developed over the past two years by the same stable of designers who gave us the award winning SSHDR1-Plus Digital Audio Workstation. Since 1993, over 5500 SSHDR1 systems have been installed into major post facilities, recording studios and national broadcasters worldwide. A trade-in deal will be offered to existing SSHDR1 systems.
