New Algorithms Announced for System 6000 May 15, 2001Two new algorithms, UnWrap, performing professional stereo to 5.1
conversion, and VSS-4, the first "genuine" stereo reverb, are now ready for
the TC Electronic System 6000 Multi-channel Platform. These additional
algorithms emphasize and expands the stereo approach of System 6000, and
focus on the integration of stereo and 5.1 into one working platform.
UnWrap
With the UnWrap algorithm TC Electronic introduces the first professional
stereo to 5.1 conversion processor for the music and film industry. Being
the ultimate surround production tool, System 6000 now offers both advanced
up-conversion and down-conversion between formats. Stereo to 5.1 conversion
is not a one-size-fits-all process, because creative decisions put into the
original mix need to be reflected in the 5.1 version. UnWrap therefore
provides the user with a palette of different solutions, optimized
individually for different types of source material. Some of the solutions
enable bit transparent reconstruction of the original stereo signal.
Consequently, the output result is more stimulating than the original stereo
version, regardless of the source material, if it is wet or dry,
naturalistic or synthetic. Most often beta testers even preferred the UnWrap
5.1 version to a new 5.1 mix made from scratch for comparison. Like other
algorithms in System 6000, UnWrap operates at Sample Rates up to 96 kHz.

VSS-4 is what TC calls the first genuine stereo reverb, and radically departs from being
an additive sustain tail added to a 2-channel signal. Based on source
related reflections from multiple angles, the precision of VSS-4 is
comparable to real-world mono or stereo sources positioned in an authentic
or virtual space, the company claims.
VSS-4 is the best stereo output room simulation ever developed by TC
Electronic, and therefore complements the virtues of the multi-channel
algorithms also available. It is also strong evidence that System 6000 is
not "only" a 5.1 processor. Please note, that due to dependence on plenty of
RAM and a fast infrastructure between DSPs, neither VSS-4 nor VSS-5 are
suited for other current TC Electronic or DAW platforms than System 6000.
Used for mastering purposes, VSS-4 maintains full bit transparency, and can
be operated at Sample Rates up to 96 kHz.
