New FilterMAX Surround LFE Filter from Martinsound
April 11, 2002
Martinsound, Inc. is introducing the FilterMAX Surround LFE Filter at NAB2002. Designed in conjunction with the TMH
Corporation and Tomlinson Holman, the architect of the TMH Qualified standard, FilterMAX is one of a series of affordable
TMH Qualified modular solutions, each designed for a specific surround sound application, marketed and sold worldwide by
Martinsound.
Designed in response to demand from the post production community, FilterMAX comprises a seventh order elliptical low pass
analog LFE filter, similar to that found in Martinsound's ManagerMAX Bass Manager, that emulates the typical brick-wall
filtering that is found in digital surround encoders. Inserting the FilterMAX into the monitor signal path makes it easy to
audition the affect of the encoding process on the LFE channel, but its utility extends beyond bass management, supporting
applications such as the elimination of undesirable low frequencies during the recording or production process.
The FilterMAX circuit, based on a frequency-dependent negative resistor ladder, features an exceptional specification and a noise
floor of -105dB that contributes virtually zero noise to the system. Ladders are preferred in high order filters due to their low
sensitivity to component tolerance variation. FilterMAX utilizes patented technology invented by Bill Whitlock of Jensen
Transformers and manufactured by THAT Corporation to provide high common-mode rejection resulting from imbalances in
source impedance of the two legs of the balanced input circuit.
Martinsound's new TMH Qualified products, which additionally include BalancerMAX Surround 5.1 Systems Interface,
MicroPannerMAX Surround 5.0 Panner, FilterMAX Surround LFE Filter and CheckMAX Surround Alignment and Diagnostic
Tapes, provide studios making the transition from stereo to surround with a range of crucial components for the 5.1 production
chain. Whether used singly, cascaded together using the six-channel link connectors, or complementing other Martinsound
MAX products, the new series of compact, 1U half-rack units will extend the capabilities of any existing production system,
allowing users to diversify and attract more business.
