Yamaha Announces Two new Signature Snare Drums

Anton Fig Signature Snare
July 11, 1997

In another example of combining tradition with technology, Yamaha System Drums uses wood hoops on two of its new signature snare drums. Nineteen-ply maple Air-Seal SystemTM hoops to be exact, and the sound is amazing.

Anton Fig, powerhouse drummer for the Late Show with David Letterman, was in search of a special snare drum sound. He helped create his model that features the 19-ply maple Vintage Hoops top and bottom, a 14" x 6" seven-ply maple Air-Seal System shell, extra-smooth release-side strainer, 20-strand hard, high-carbon steel snare wires, Vintage interior finish, unique lugs in a 10-lug design and high-gloss Solid Black lacquer finish.

The extraordinary Japanese drummer, known on the international music scene from his long association with the fusion band Casiopea, Akira Jimbo also became interested in the wood hoop concept. He helped create his model that features 19-ply maple Vintage Hoops top and bottom, a 13" x 7" eight-ply beech Air-Seal System shell, extra-smooth release-side strainer, 14-strand high-carbon steel snare wires Vintage interior finish, small-body lugs in a 6-lug design and high-gloss, White Sparkle lacquer finish.

Both drums reflect a unique tone and offer explosive rim shots and cross stick shots. The Fig drum reflects a full-bodied tone with great warmth and sustain, while Jimbo's drum has a sharper attack, medium-full tone and brightness. The light weight of the Vintage Hoops, as compared to metal rims, allows the drums to open up as well as offering substantial dynamic range and projection.

The Anton Fig model has a suggested retail price of $670 and the Akira Jimbo model has a suggested retail price of $600.
