DigiTech VCS-1 Dual Vacuum-Tube Dynamics Processor January 16, 1997
Hot on the heels of the VTP-1, DigiTech's new VCS-1 studio dynamics processor
squeezes two channels of 12AX7A tubes, full-featured compression, de-essing, noise gating and
peak limiting into-a stylish 2U rack chassis.
Combining the latest high-performance VCAs and RMS detectors with high-voltage "Class A" tube
circuitry, the VCS-1 delivers the ultimate in studio dynamics processing. Following a "no
compromises" approach to circuit design and component quality, the unit embodies impeccable
audio performance, superior features and long-term reliability.
The compressor section of the VCS-1 features adjustable controls for Threshold, Ratio, Attack and
Release, as well as switchable Hard or Soft Knee characteristics. The Threshold indicator is a
bicolored LED, with green for below threshold and red for above. An Auto switch for "set and forget"
program-dependent control of attack and release time constants is also available.
The unit's downward-expander-type Noise Gate, De-esser and "Brickwall" Limiter all feature variable
Thresholds and green indictor LEDs to highlight when each function is active. The Noise Gate also
features a control for Variable Attenuation, while the Limiter is designed to work in conjunction with
the unit's compressor to ensure that the specified threshold is never exceeded at the output, a
useful feature for digital recording where exceeding 0 dB is undesirable.
A large illuminated VU meter on each channel can be switched to display Output Level or Gain
Reduction. When switched to the Output position, the meter deflects from the left to the right (-30
to +3) like a standard VU meter. With the switch in the GR (Gain Reduction) position, the meter
needle sits at 0 VU with no signal present, and works from right to left (0 to -30) as signal is applied
and gain reduction takes place. If the channel is bypassed while the meter switch is in the Output
position, the meter will display the input level. A front-panel-accessible meter trimpot is also
included to allow the user to calibrate the 0 VU position for the Gain Reduction display.
The VCS-l's Tube Gain control acts as a make-up gain control for large amounts of compression,
and it can also be used to increase the drive amount of the tube stage. The Output control allows
the user to maintain nominal output level when large amounts of tube drive are applied with the
Tube Gain control. In short, these controls operate much in the same way as the Pre-Gain and
Post-Trim controls on the VTP-1.
A Stereo Link switch links the control signals from channel 1 to channel 2 to allow for stereo
operation. With the switch in the Out position, the two channels operate independently of each
other in dual mono mode.
Additional front panel features include hard-wired Bypass switches, which take the VCA and the
tube stage completely out of the audio path, and red Clip LEDs, which light if clipping occurs at any
of several key points monitored in the circuit.
The rear panel offers both XLR and TRS 1/4-inch balanced input and output connectors. Nominal
input level is switchable for either +4 dBu or -10 dBv operation, while nominal output level is
determined by the setting of the Output control. Balanced TRS 1/4-inch Side-Chain Send and
Return connectors allow the user to insert an EQ for frequency-sensitive compression.
The VCS-1's industrial design further exploits the classic look established by DigiTech's VTP-1 dual
vacuum-tube preamp, EQ and converter--already considered a hit with the pro audio industry.
Manufacturer's suggested retail price on the VCS-1 is $999.95. For more information, visit their web site at www.digitech.com. |
