Meinl Percussion Celebrates 20th Anniversary January 29, 1998MEINL percussion celebrates it's twentieth anniversary this year. MEINL, a family-run business, is based in Neustadt/Aisch, Franconia, Germany, under the competent leadership of Roland and Reinhold Meinl. MEINL's fine percussion instruments have made their mark on the percussion industry during the company's first two decades of operation.
Since it's inception in 1978, MEINL has never been content with the status quo; rather, MEINL has emphasized the development of new and improved traditional percussion instruments. By building a production facility in Thailand, MEINL revolutionized the future of the entire percussion market. From day one, the Thai production facility has consistently maintained the same tough German standards for outstanding quality and craftsmanship in the production of percussion instruments.
This important step enabled MEINL to become the first percussion manufacturer to offer professional instruments at an affordable price, thereby making them available to a broader customer base. This pioneering effort showed other manufacturers a new way to excel in the international market place.
In addition to using traditional woods in the making of congas, bongos and especially the wide range of hand percussion instruments, MEINL introduced new materials, such as fiberglass. Instruments were priced low enough to appeal to a large group of players, and they gained a large market share. MEINL also devoted a lot of time and effort to the continuous improvement of traditional instruments. The legendary Germanmanufactured Woodcraft congas are just one example of how this effort has paid off.
Innovations, like the Floatune conga, Floatune djembe, Floatune timbales, Free-Ride bongo, Steely-Stand and Realplayer Steelbells, have helped MEINL percussion achieve a leadership role in today's world market. MEINL broke new ground with it's DUO congas design, which incorporates two materials, wood and fiberglass, in one instrument. A large variety of high-quality, colorful hand percussion completes the offering. In this category, NINO, a new line in the preschool and elementary school percussion division, is indicative of MEINL's progressive approach.
Today, MEINL is proud to offer the world's largest selection of percussion instruments. Top musicians, such as Mongo Santamaria, Luis Conte and Hakim Ludin, among many others, prefer MEINL instruments. With input from such outstanding performers, MEINL's young team of engineers continues to outperform their competitors.
