Opcode Announces Full Product Support of USB Protocol

New Connections Standard Delivers Revolutionary Capabilities

January 29, 1998

Opcode Systems announces that it will fully support the recently announced USB protocol for the connection of peripheral devices to personal computers. This standard allows for the simultaneous and effortless connection of up to 127 external devices of various types including keyboards, monitors, CD-ROM drives, digitizers and many more. The USB standard was developed by Compaq, DEC, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, NEC and Northern Telecom. It provides data transfer rates of 12 Mb/s allowing it to transfer data such as audio, video and MIDI. Connections to the bus can also be made on the fly (hot swapping) with the host computer automatically enabling and disabling drivers as needed. This endorsement and support of USB further solidifies Opcode's position as the industry leader in forward thinking product design.

"Microsoft is excited to have an industry-leading music company like Opcode support USB. The ease of use and setup that musicians gain with USB connectivity will surpass any available systems found today. The high-speed connections provided by USB MIDI will allow DirectMusic to support performance quality music at a significantly lower cost. We believe the ease of use, lower cost and higher performance provided by USB MIDI will expand all segments of the music market." Billy Brackenridge, Senior Program Manager Windows Platforms, Microsoft.

Chris Halaby, President of Opcode Systems, Inc. states, "With the significantly higher throughput of USB, Opcode will be able to provide all levels of musicians with new tools that seamlessly mix hardware with software to provide a fully intuitive, and truly easy to set up music production environment."
