New Fostex D-108 Hard Disk Recorder

.WAV compatibility and built-in SCSI make the new D-108 ideal for post production and project studio applications

January 28, 1999

Continuing its 17-year tradition of delivering ground-breaking recording technologies that musicians, project recordists and post production professionals can really use at price points that they can actually afford, Fostex Corporation of America introduced the new Fostex D-108 8-track hard disk recorder at the 1999 Winter NAMM Show in Los Angeles.

The D-108 is loaded with compatibility features that make it especially suited to post production and editing applications. .WAV compatibility enables post production professionals and musicians to save and load sound data in .WAV format and to transfer data to and from external DOS-formatted recording media via removable SCSI media. The D-108 also includes a factory-installed SCSI Interface for fast backup to external SCSI devices and a digital interface with standard optical connectors for S/PDIF and ADAT(TM) digital interchange.

"The new D-108 migrates some of the most successful and high-end recording, post production and sound design technologies to a price point that musicians and project recordists everywhere can afford," noted Phil Celia, Fostex Director of Sales. "The D-108 features the compatibility and a functionality that should make it an instant success in this market."

The D-108 features improvements on Fostex's trademark functionality and userfriendliness. A new graphical preview function offers intuitive fine editing adjustment, a comprehensive dot matrix 16-digit character indication includes the program title display, and a sound level that is graphically displayed for easier edit point decisions using the level envelope display.

Featuring 8-track simultaneous recording /reproducing via 8-track digital ADAT, 8-track analog, the D-108 comes with 16 virtual tracks for 24-track flexibility and 99 song programs. The D-108 also incorporates Fostex's proprietary FDMS3 disk management format, allowing up to 1,548 track minutes at FS 44.1kHz on 8.2 GB and faster editing speed. In addition to the 6-point edit memory, the D-108 also features a 99-point locate memory.

As with other Fostex products, the D-108 is available in a number of different models, each with built-in features that offer end users a near-customized solution that best suits their particular application. The D-108 TC features a T/C Sync card, enabling it to slave to an external LTC and resolve to video reference signal or word clock and output LTC internally converted from MTC. It also includes the newly developed "digital I/F gate alley," offering sync preset functionality to simplify messy sync settings and chase function to MTC and LTC. D-108B provides analog balanced +4dBu I/O on D-sub 25-pin connectors and balanced I/O.

The D108 comes equipped with an internal caddy that offers end-users the opportunity to purchase and easily install any of the approved operational drives depending on the required recording. All models of the D-108 can be purchased with or without an installed hard drive.

"By leaving some of the features open to the discretion of the end-user, we're not asking them to pay for features that they'll never use. " Celia emphasized. "Instead, musicians, post professionals and project recordists can choose which ever model D-108 best suits their application."

Available for immediate delivery, the D-108 with removable hard drive carries a suggested retail price of $1,495.00. Multiple D-10s may be cascaded for more tracks on larger projects.

Fostex Corporation of America exhibited its entire product line at the 1999 Winter NAMM Show at Booth #1155 in the Los Angeles Convention Center.
