Remo Introduces "BlackMax" Marching Snare Drum Heads

January 28, 1999

Carol Carpenter, Marching Percussion product manager for Remo, Inc., has announced the introduction of "BlackMax" marching drumheads- the latest addition to the complete line of Remo Marching Percussion heads. Available for thirteen and fourteen-inch marching snare drums, BlackMax heads combine the strength and high-tension benefits of an advanced woven Kevlar with the weatherresistance and musical benefits of Mylar plus the extreme strength of Remo's crimped aluminum channel.

The new heads were thoroughly field-tested by top Drum & Bugle Corps and University Bands. Santa Clara Vanguard, winner of the DCI 1998 High Percussion caption award, featured Black Max drumheads on their snare drums this past summer; contributing to the line's unique percussion sound and effect.

"'BlackMax' heads are designed to promote the trend of slightly lower batter head tensioning," says Carpenter. "Their 'Performance Profile' includes the durability and sensitivity of Kevlar as well as the tone and feel of Mylar. In addition to the benefits of increased warmth and response, the surface is extremely hand-friendly. This combination of materials provides drummers with improved sound and feel but doesn't require changes in their technical or musical styles."

In a related development, Remo also unveiled a new Ebony Snare-Side head. Developed to provide a darker, drier snare sound as well as a distinctive look, Ebony Snare-Side heads feature a 400 gauge version of Ebony drumhead film in a standard aluminum hoop with a high-tension, low-collar designed for corps and marching band use. Ebony Snare Side heads are available for 13, 14 and 15-inch marching snare drums.
