Tama unveiled it's first artist signature snare drums, the Signature Palette
Series, at the 1999 Winter NAMM show. Two of the models were co-designed by
Simon Phillips.
Phillips' new drums, the Gladiator and the Pageant, are remarkably different
from one another. Explained Simon: "If we were going to have two different
signature snare drums, I thought, let's at least have them be very, very different,
which these drums certainly are. The reason is this: unless they are completely
different, two snare drums on a track or miked live can really end up sounding
very similar. On the Gladiator, the combination of a 5 1/2 x 14 size, bronze
shell and flanged hoops worked in nearly every circumstance. The 12" Pageant
is more like what I used in my old 14" drums, wood with die-cast hoops."
